Position: Associate Researcher
After 30 years' service with British Transport Police, Robert retired to Northern Ireland with the intention (amongst other things) of tracing his father’s family roots. He carried out groundwork research through membership of the North of Ireland Family History Society and was soon working as a genealogist on a semi-professional basis.
He became involved in probate research as a result of what he describes as a ‘series of spooky coincidences’ and for many years acted as a probate researcher in Ireland for UK and Australian clients.
In 2003 he was admitted as a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland (now Accredited Genealogists Ireland), which is dedicated to maintaining high standards in research.
Robert considers that his police background is a major advantage when conducting research, but realises that he is on a constant learning curve. He has come to be philosophical about cases that do not work out. Sometimes ‘the documents you are looking for are in the safe on the Titanic’.
