The job title ‘Probate Genealogist’ used to be far less well known, I would briefly say that I use genealogical material to link potential beneficiaries to the deceased, that either being a person who has died without leaving a will, or a person mentioned in a will, but must be proven.
Nowadays the term ‘Heir Hunter’ has become well known due to the BBC1 TV show, this is often mentioned by others when I call them on my cases.
Paul’s interest in probate genealogy was sparked after researching and locating a missing family member. “I had been interested in local history most of my life and my family history since I was 18, having a keen eye for detail in all I do. Whilst carrying out research of my family tree in St Catherine’s House on the Aldwych in London, I observed a company of people hurrying around the research room, making notes and building up family trees. I enquired as to what they were doing, after it was briefly explained to me.
A month later I had already attended an interview and been recruited to work as a probate researcher in the research rooms.”
Paul is a Dementia Friend and is also trained in First Aid at work.
